Description

From the drawing boards of Sparkman & Stephens, (design # 1212) and one of the last yachts built at Tore Holm's yard in Sweden, Aquila is completely ready for an ocean crossing and equally ready to perform as a family cruiser, classic yacht racer or extremely comfortable day sailor.

Aquila’s current owner first sailed aboard her in 1976 as a member of a delivery crew bringing the boat from New England to The Azores. Something about Aquila must have really struck a chord with him and as when Aquila came up for sale in 1977 he quickly snapped her up. Aquila was located in Greece at that time and so for several years he cruised her in the Mediterranean before heading west across the Atlantic to the West Indies and eventually back to her home in Maine and then sailed her back and forth from New England to the Caribbean several times before eventually selling her in 1982 and getting on with a life ashore and all that entails. However Aquila was always on his mind and in a place in his heart so when she again became available for purchase in 2014 he bought her once again

Since 2014 Aquila has been sailed more seasonally than prior use but still has put in her time offshore with trips down to the Bahamas and Cuba in both 2014 and 2018. These days Aquila spends the sailing seasons cruising the coast of Maine not only for the enjoyment of her owner and friends but also as the centerpiece of a thriving captained charter business based out of Brooklin, Maine. For more info on Aquila’s charter business click on this link https://aquila-sail.square.site/ .

Aquila is in very good condition and very well equipped. Aquila is now hauled for the 2024-25 winter (stored inside) and awaits your inspection.

INTERIOR LAYOUT, ACCOMMODATIONS AND EQUIPMENT

AQUILA’s interior spaces are finished in the Herreshoff style of white painted overheads, bulkheads and galley locker fronts accented by varnished mahogany trim, cabin sides, hull sheathing and furniture with raw teak cabin soles thru-out. Ventilation and natural lighting of the below decks areas is provided for by way opening overhead hatches and dorade vents along with opening and fixed ports. Additional lighting and ventilation is provided by gimbaled kerosene lamps (4ea.), overhead dome-style lights, reading lights and well-placed electric fans. On cooler days or nights the chill is taken off the air by a Sigma diesel cabin heater situated in the main saloon.

One enters the interior spaces by way of a 5-step companionway ladder slightly off-set to starboard. To starboard of the companionway ladder is a sit-down navigation station. To port (outboard) and aft (behind) the companionway ladder is the galley area.. On centerline and slightly forward to the companionway ladder is the centerboard tackle housing of Monel fabrication nicely hidden behind varnished mahogany panels. Moving forward one enters the main saloon with varnished (gimbaled) mahogany table on center line with settees and pilot berths to port and starboard. Next forward is the passageway to the forward cabin with Head Area to port and hanging lockers to starboard. Sleeping cabin furthest forward with accommodations for two (2) persons
