Full Details
Vessel Big Bird
The Boat:
Big Bird
Built in Sonderborg Denmark in 1978.
Hull no. 4 of about 30 built over a 4 year period. She is 33'Long. 17' wide. 3'draft. 40' air draft. 8000lbs. fully loaded.
In Denmark it called the Trimare 46. In the US it was to be sold as theTrimare 33.
My boat is the only one to make it to North America with the intentions of developing a market. But the deal never happened. The previous owner found her on lake Champlain in upstate New York being used commercially as a sunset cruise boat. He moved the boat to Maine and sailed on Penobscot Bay.
Then his heath failed and the boat fell into disrepair. That's when I found her. That was in 2014. Two years I spent on a refit which included expanding the aft cabin into a useable double berth.
New wiring, plumbing, woodwork, Awlgrip, Bimini, dodger, sails, Garmin 7" chart plotter +AIS, water maker, diesel heater, large upright frig/freezer, on demand propane hot water, 560 watts solar, 3 burner propane stove, new sails. Then I moved aboard full time working and Sailing in Maine.
In July 2019 the two cylinder westerbeke engine was removed and replaced with a new Yanmar 3YM30AE.
The engine currently has about 700 hours.
. At the same time s new Lithionics 550 AH battery was installed. In 2020 we sailed to Canada then south to the Bahamas for 6 months.
. It's a perfect Bahama boat. In 2023 the standing rigging was replaced in Saint Marys Georgia.
That was followed by a trip to the Dry Tortugas and then the last Haul out at Saint Marys Boat Services on August 2023. Since laying up a new Balmar 250 amp alternator has been installed replacing a smaller alternator. It has been run and is functioning properly. Once back in the water and running at temperature the settings will need adjusting via the Bluetooth app.
Things that need doing:
Wood in the cockpit needs refinishing but no rot. The main sail is still in its shipping box fresh back from a tune up. It needs to be reinstalled. Forward port light drips on occasion. Roof hatch also. I found it easily managed but it needs fixing. VHF antenna is new but doesn't seem to be working.
The rigger is aware and will check it. I haven't used the water heater in a while. I think it uses to much water and prefer to do without.
Yellow Awlgrip is faded and needs a good awlgrip sealant . There is a broken lifeline stanchion that needs to be welded. Someone has stepped on the engine hatch locks and broken a couple. They need to be replaced. Boats sitting on land get dirty fast. It needs a good cleaning. Bottom paint
