Description

Chosen Sun is a clean, well-maintained Grand Banks 42 Classic trawler. She offers efficient fuel-sipping twin Ford Lehman 120 hp engines. The fold-down mast allows an attainable height of 16 ft. 2 in., which makes this grand lady an excellent option for America’s Great Loop as well as offshore or intercoastal cruising. She has a spacious interior, great storage, and the teak fit and finish one expects from a Grand Banks yacht of this vintage. With a two-stateroom and two-head layout, she suits both guests and cruising families.

The sellers have cruised her on the ICW and off the coast of South Carolina, the Atlantic Coast of Florida and the Florida Keys. Chosen Sun was their first large boat, and they found her easy to handle.

    Vessel Walkthrough

Chosen Sun can be boarded at either the port or starboard handrail gate or via the swim platform ladder. The interior can be entered via either side-deck door. The classic open deck is aft and stores the tender, which is conveyed with the vessel. Steps to port lead from the deck to the flybridge.

Both side-deck doors lead to the salon. The interior helm station is to starboard, across from the galley to port. The L-Shaped settee is to starboard aft of the helm station. The full-beam en-suite master stateroom is aft, four steps down from the salon. The guest V-berth with en-suite wet-head is forward of the salon, down four steps.

    Accommodations

    Salon:

The salon on Chosen Sun is accessed via the doors to both port and starboard from the deck. The salon highlights the classic Grand Banks teak fit and finish. The sole is parquet, and features hatches which provide access to the engine room. One of the hatches is hinged and can be latched open. There is a teak overhead grab-rail, and headroom of 6 ft. 4 in.

The salon has large opening windows, which provide plenty of natural light, and a panoramic view of the surroundings. All of the windows got a full tint in 2023, which provides some sun protection to the interior. Cordless honeycomb blackout shades (2023) are on the small salon windows. The large side windows feature cordless honeycomb shades (2023) that can be adjusted for blackout or light-filtering effects.

The lower helm station is to starboard. It features a teak ship’s wheel as well as a full complement of gauges, throttles, and electronics. The electrical panel is located below the helm station, to starboard. There is a three-piece windshield; the center window opens for ventilation. The port side window has a crack that has been sealed. A storage area for navigational tools is built into the helm station surface.

Directly aft of the helm station, to starboard, is the liquor cabinet and ice maker. The liquor cabinet top opens to reveal bottle and glass storage. The cabinet front opens to provide a handy ledge for mixing beverages. A Vitrifrigo ice maker (2020) is below the liquor cabinet, as well as several storage drawers.

The L-Shaped settee, to starboard, is a light green fabric. The cushions and the fabric were all replaced in 2023. There is tremendous storage, as expected of a Grand Banks, under the settee. One of the highlights of the salon on Chosen Sun is the beautiful and versatile drop-leaf dining table. The center of the top opens to reveal storage; there are small hidden drawers on both sides for storage; the base features both bottle storage and magazine/book storage.

Across from the settee, to port, is a large storage area. There is a full-length strip of electrical outlets, which is handy for the many electronic devices in use today. The counter would make an ideal space for a television, if the new owner wants to add one. A counter-height U-Line refrigerator with a small freezer compartment is located forward in the storage area.

    Galley:

The galley on Chosen Sun is to port, across from the interior helm station. It is equipped with an Empava two-burner electric induction stove, a built-in High Pointe microwave/convection oven, a two-drawer Vitrifrigo refrigerator/freezer, and a double stainless steel sink. The faucet was replaced in 2023. There is storage in multiple cabinets and drawers, including an in-counter cabinet with dividers for dishes.

    Master Stateroom:

The full-beam, en-suite, master stateroom on Chosen Sun is aft. It is four steps down from the salon and has a privacy hatch/door. The sole is highly glossed teak parquet. The master stateroom can also be accessed from the deck using a hatch and step ladder, which latches out of the way for convenience. A full berth (54 in. x 75 in.) is located to starboard. A single berth (42 in. x 75 in.) is located to port. Both mattresses were replaced in 2023. The berths are separated by a dresser with drawers and a make-up cabinet with a stool. This area would be ideal to use as a workspace if needed.

The storage in the master stateroom includes a large hanging locker to port, drawers under both berths, hinged cabinets in the steps, and the drawers in the dresser.

There are room-darkening honeycomb blinds on the windows on both sides of the master stateroom (2023). The reading lights on both berths were replaced in 2024. The master stateroom also features a full-length wall mirror and an en-suite head.

    Master Head:

There is a full privacy door into the master head on Chosen Sun. A molded counter and sink is below a window with a room-darkening honeycomb blind (2023). There is storage under the vanity, as well as in a cabinet next to the sink area. The separate stall shower has 6 ft. 7 in. of headroom and is 32 in. wide and 24 in. deep. It has a shower curtain, and a teak grate. The removable shower head and sink facet were replaced in 2023. The electric toilet is attached to a Electra Scan system. There is an overhead light in both the vanity area and the stall shower. A wall-mounted mirror is next to the sink.

    Guest Stateroom/V-Berth:

The en-suite guest stateroom on Chosen Sun is the V-Berth forward of the salon. There are four steps down, which can be removed to access the engine room. There is a privacy hatch/door. The V-Berth fabric matches the salon. The V-Berth cushions and fabric were replaced in 2023. There are two reading lights which were replaced in 2024.

The sole is teak parquet. The windows have room-darkening honeycomb blinds (2023). There is a large overhead hatch, with a convenient fold-up step on the lower bulkhead to starboard. There is a tremendous amount of storage including: a pantry at the entryway to port, a large lower cabinet also to port, drawers under the berths, a cabinet under the center of the berth, and storage accessible by lifting the mattresses.

Access to the anchor locker is forward. Access to the forward area of the engine room is under the stairs down from the salon. The en-suite head is to starboard.

    Guest Head:

The guest head on Chosen Sun is to starboard in the Guest Stateroom. It has a full door for privacy. The entire sole is a teak grate. There is a shower curtain to separate the shower area. There is a molded counter and sink below a window with a room-darkening honeycomb blind (2023). There is storage both under and over the vanity, and a towel bar mounted on the door. The removable shower head and sink faucet were replaced in 2023. The electric toilet is attached to an Electra Scan system. A wall-mounted mirror is next to the sink. Access to the lower helm station electrical connections is through a cabinet in the bulkhead.

    Deck, Flybridge and Hull

Chosen Sun is a “trunk-style” trawler with a full walk-around deck. This aids in maneuverability for line handling. The original teak decks were removed in 1998 and replaced with fiberglass with non-skid paint. The toe-rail is varnished teak. There is no wood on the handrail. The steps leading to the flybridge are natural teak, as is the sole of the flybridge.

The tender is stored on the trunk deck. The mast/tender davit with winch was rebuilt in 2025. The block and tackle were replaced at the same time. The trunk deck also has a hatch with a dark blue Sunbrella cover, which allows access to the master stateroom. There is a storage lazarette in the deck aft. A covered Magma grill is mounted on the aft rail.

The foredeck on Chosen Sun features a large hatch, with a dark blue Sunbrella cover, in the raised portion of the deck, which also has stainless steel handrails. A natural teak bow pulpit holds the ground tackle. A Lowfrans Tigress 12 v windlass with foot controls (rebuilt 2025) is located forward.

    • Lofrans 12v windlass (rebuilt 2025) with foot controls on the bow, and controls at both helm stations
    • 30kg Bruce anchor with 150 ft. 5/16 in. chain (chain new in 2025)
    • Spare 20kg Danforth anchor

The open flybridge has a dark blue Sunbrella bimini top, which coordinates with the blue stripe on the waterline. The bimini top, as well as all of its hardware, was replaced in 2023. The flybridge on Chosen Sun has front and back-facing, white vinyl, split bench seats. The spacious flybridge deck has room for additional free-standing chairs, coolers, or tables as needed. There is a dark blue Sunbrella cover that protects the windscreen, the helm station, the wooden ship’s wheel, and the seating area. There is storage forward, under the helm station.

The stern is varnished teak, and the swim platform is natural teak and has a swim ladder. The bottom of the hull of Chosen Sun was regularly maintained with monthly cleaning and the replacement of anodes. The vessel was hauled out in August 2025. The bottom was professionally sanded and repainted. A barnacle barrier was also added to the propellers and running gear, and the cutlass bearings were replaced. The propellers are 23 in. 3-Blade on 1 ½ in. stainless shafts. There are spare propellers on board.

All of the windows have neutral sun-protection coverings, which were restitched and re-hemmed in 2025. They snap on the outside of the windows.
