Description
“Watts Up Doc” is a unique offering of a Maine Cat 38 LS-E due to its upgraded inboard OceanVolt electric propulsion. The previous owner undertook the conversion from electric outboard motors mounted under the bridge-deck to hull mounted electric motors.
The Maine Cat 38 was designed as a fast, yet comfortable small cruising catamaran, ‘for sailors who love to sail’ (designer Dick Vermeulen). This is verified by the current owners who are committed to performance and can testify to its ability to sail close to the wind using its dagger-boards. It was Sail magazine’s “Best Multi Cruising Boat under 40” feet in 2017.
The attributes of the Maine Cat 38 are in keeping with the design parameters. Light weight; thanks to vinylester resin infused fiberglass layup, over Core-Cell PH core. Fast; hulls are narrow below the waterline with low wetted surface. Comfortable; above-waterline flare and reverse sheer of hulls provide ample space & headroom; large, fully enclosed bridgedeck/cockpit with sheltered forward helm. Easy handling; superb visibility from cockpit with primary winches and line handling at helm & mainsail controls on transom.
The electric propulsion system works like a hybrid automobile. The feathering props allow for regeneration of the batteries while under sail; when battery levels get below a certain level, the diesel generator starts automatically, so no ‘range anxiety’ if you are forced to motor for lengthy periods. Under battery power, in flat conditions the boat moves easily at 6kts.
This boat has been lightly used initially in New England and in the last 3 years, on the Chesapeake Bay. It is currently on the hard in Deltaville, VA.
