Description
Gratitude features a raised galley and nav station, a single wheel, twin rudders, and a variable draft swing keel. She presents very well and is in good condition. The current owners purchased the 2004 Southerly 110 in 2011. She has sailed up and down the East Coast from Florida to NJ several times. She was refitted in 2013 after Sandy hit the NJ area, where she was in a yard waiting to be painted. A marine surveyor assessed the damage, and Hinckley Yacht Services performed the work.
After Sandy, she was upgraded from stem to stern, including new electronics, rudders, hull paint, and bottom paint. The cockpit was redesigned, moving the traveler forward of the dodger and making sailing more comfortable. The railing was removed to add push-pit seats. In addition to upgrading many basic features, the running rigging was replaced, and an asymmetric spinnaker was added. Gratitude also had her Bimini, Dodger, and cockpit enclosure canvas redone in 2021.
A marine surveyor assessed the damage, which Hinckley Yacht Services repaired in 2013. A copy of the post-damage survey is available upon request.
The Southerly 110 was designed by Rob Humphreys and built to cross oceans by Northshore Yachts in England. With the keel up, the Southerly 110 has an extreme shoal draft of only 2 feet 4 inches! With the keel down, the S110 draft is an impressive 7 feet 2 inches. The keel is fully adjustable to any depth you wish by pushing a button. The twin rudders provide exceptional tracking on all points of sail.
SHALLOW DRAFT FREEDOM - At the touch of a button, the keel can be raised and sail in shallow waters. This means you can extend your cruising grounds considerably. Raising the swing keel gives you access to many tidal locations and allows you to berth this yacht on the beach, keep her at your shallow water dock, or even on a lift!
DEEP DRAFT PERFORMANCE—The swing keel provides a deep draft, which gives the boat greater stability due to the increased righting moment. In practice, the boat is stiffer, carries her sail better, and carves her way efficiently to windward in any seaway. The swing keel's airfoil shape is highly efficient and allows you to point high (30 degrees).

Hull, Swing Keel, Deck, and Cockpit
Hull:
Hand laid up heavy-duty GRP molding, incorporating multi-axial and unidirectional reinforcements for strength and impact resistance. The hull is solid glass below the waterline and cored with balsa above the waterline for increased strength and insulation. The thickness of the fiberglass increases progressively toward the keel area. The keel box is an integral part of the hull layup. A substantial skeg is fitted on the centerline to protect the propeller and rudders when the yacht is dried out.
- Vetus Bow Thruster
- New OEM Rudders installed (2013)
- Hull painted (2013)
Swing Keel:
The fixed ballast is an iron casting that acts as a grounding plate and transverse stiffening for the keel unit. It is fitted into a recess in the hull in the area of the keel box using stainless steel bolts. The aerofoil swing keel is cast iron and incorporates a stainless steel pivot at the leading edge. The swing keel is raised and lowered by a hydraulic ram powered by an electrically driven pump operated from the cockpit. There is a hand-operated backup. All the hydraulics are easily accessible for maintenance.
Deck:
Decks are nonslip and easy to get around. Raised teak-capped bulwarks provide extra safety. Forward is a stainless-steel stem head fitting with twin bow rollers. Salon windows and ports are partially reflective toughened glass. Lifeline gates on both port and starboard sides open forward and midships. The deck is a hand-laid-up GRP of sandwich-type construction using balsa core stiffening, with plywood in high-stress areas where fittings are positioned. The entire deck is bonded and mechanically fixed to the hull, resulting in a strong and integrated unit.

Swing Keel Description
Excerpt from John Kretschmer's Southerly 110 review in Sailing Magazine from November of 2008: "The term "swing keel" might be a bit misleading, there is nothing lightweight or small boat-like about the 110's keel arrangement. The keel box, or cavity, is an integral part of the hull and the 4,455 pounds of fixed ballast is cast iron. This section is strong enough for the 110 to dry out in tidal harbors with no adverse effects to the hull and also offers transverse stiffening to the swing keel unit. The 2,310-pound airfoil-shaped swing keel is also cast iron and incorporates a stainless steel pivot at its leading edge. A hydraulic ram, powered by an electric motor, raises and lowers the keel. Naturally, there is a manual backup system. The swing keel can actually absorb a shock load better than a fixed foil, and upon impact will retract back into the hull, rotating on its pivot and sparing the boat more serious damage." "The keel can also be trimmed, by means of a push button at the helm, to various positions. In deep water sailing upwind, the keel is lowered to its full 7-foot, 2-inch length and the 110 tracks like a demon. Off the wind, it can be raised to a more advantageous point. Nosing into a shallow anchorage the keel can be raised completely and the 2-foot, 4-inch draft will certainly be appreciated."
Manufacturer's Provided Description
The Southerly 110 embodies the established features of the Southerly range, which have proved popular over many years. The modern hull and rig set very high standards of performance, versatility, and sheer good looks, which appeal to family and cruising yachtsmen alike. Her aft cockpit, plumb bow line, and twin rudder configuration, combined with her sail plan, make her a fast, fun, and exhilarating yacht to sail.
Whitlock direct steering, combined with the twin rudder arrangement, gives instantly responsive steering, making helming this yacht a real pleasure. Even when the wind increases and gusts attempt to push her off course, the Swing Keel's hull form and deep draft enable her to stand up to the wind and carry her canvas, while the twin rudders give exceptional directional stability and control. The Southerly 110 is so light on the helm she will sail herself most of the time. Single-line mainsail reefing and a furling genoa make sail handling easy – ideal for family or short-handed sailing.
The unique Swing Keel provides deep draft performance (deeper than most yachts), for powerful windward performance. At the 'touch of a button' the keel can be raised to just 2'4'' for shallow draft freedom, allowing you to sail in coastal areas and inland waters. As with all Southerlys, the yacht will also dry out and sit upright.
As you board the Southerly 110, Northshore’s traditional quality of build shines through. Good, all-round views, a spacious saloon, an open galley, a raised chart table, and a large aft cabin are particular features of this yacht.
