The Sabre 34 MK I is a solid example of a high-quality Sabre Yacht. Known for their excellent sea-keeping abilities and stout construction, they were engineered and built to last for many years.
Southerly has been well maintained over the years. Many upgrades include:
- 2023 - New North 135% furling Genoa
- 2022 - replaced throttle and transmission cables
- 2022 - Steering cables and pulleys inspected and repaired.
- 2021 - Replaced masthead light
- 2019 - New Simrad Electronics including GO 9 chart plotter, 2 B&G multifunction displays, new speed/depth transducer, Simrad Autopilot
- 2005 - Upgraded cabin top winch to Lewmar 32 self-tailing
- 2005 - Replaced furling system to Harken

Construction
- Sabre 34 Mark I was produced with a balsa-cored hull.
- The hull was hand laid, using mat and roving with polyester resin-
- The decks are cored with 3/8-inch and half-inch end-grained balsa, although plywood is used in high-load areas. The hull-and-deck joint is an inward flange and through-bolted. F
- Floors, knees, bulkheads, and most structural members are well supported.
- The external lead ballast is fastened with stainless keel bolts, which are supported by a reinforced fiberglass fillet. The nuts are visible in the bilge.
