Description
The Beneteau Oceanis 311 is a well-regarded 31-foot cruising sailboat designed by renowned French naval architect Jean-Marie Finot and built by Beneteau USA between 1997 and 2003. Known for its smart use of space, balanced sailing performance, and comfortable interior layout, the Oceanis 311 has become a popular choice among sailors looking for a versatile coastal cruiser that is easy to handle while still offering generous accommodations.
The wide beam carried well aft creates a spacious cockpit and allows for a surprisingly large interior for a boat of this size. The layout typically features 2 private cabins, a large main salon with opposing settees, a functional L-shaped galley, a dedicated navigation station, and an enclosed head with a shower. 6'2"of headroom, the Oceanis 311 offers comfortable standing space rarely found in many boats in the 30-foot range.
Above deck, the Oceanis 311 features a fractional rig, wheel steering, and an ergonomic cockpit designed for both sailing and relaxation. The signature sugar-scoop transom with integrated swim platform provides easy water access, making the boat well-suited for cruising, swimming, and dinghy use. Did you know that Beneteau was the first production builder to incorporate the sugar scoop transom in the 1980s?
Combining modern cruising amenities with efficient sailing performance, the Beneteau Oceanis 311 remains a highly sought-after model for sailors seeking a capable, easy-to-handle cruiser ideal for coastal passages, weekend sailing, and extended cruising adventures.
"Tootie Ma" was built in Marion, SC, and is located in the New Orleans Municipal Yacht Harbor on the West Side. Scroll down to view her location on Google Maps.

Walkthrough
Cockpit
Boarding the boat from the walk-through transom swim platform, you step into a comfortable cockpit with wheel steering and wrap-around seating. The cockpit is designed for both sailing and relaxing, with space for several adults.
- Helm pedestal with wheel steering and engine controls
- Teak cockpit seats with storage underneath
- Stern rail seats on port and starboard
- Cockpit shower and swim ladder at the transom
- Easy access to the side decks for sail handling
- The sugar-scoop stern platform makes boarding from the dock or water simple and is a favorite feature for swimmers and dinghy use.
Companionway
Entering through the companionway, you step down into a warm interior finished in Beneteau’s classic cherry wood cabinetry.
To starboard is the navigation station, which includes:
- Chart table with instrument panel
- 12-volt and 110-volt electrical panels
- VHF radio and navigation electronics
- Storage for charts and manuals
- This station doubles as a small desk and control center for onboard systems.
Galley
Immediately to port of the companionway is the L-shaped galley, designed so the cook can brace securely while underway.
- Two-burner propane stove with oven
- Stainless steel sink with hot and cold pressure water
- Top-loading refrigerator/icebox
- Storage lockers for cookware and dry goods
- The galley is compact but very functional for coastal cruising.
Salon
Moving forward is the main salon, which serves as the central living space aboard.
- Two full-length settees to port and starboard
- Centerline table with folding leaves for dining
- Storage lockers and shelving along the hull sides
- Convertible seating that can form additional berths
- The layout comfortably seats 4–6 people for meals or relaxing.
Forward Cabin
The forward stateroom provides a private sleeping area.
- Large V-berth
- Hanging locker
- Shelves and storage compartments
- Opening hatch for light and ventilation
- This cabin is commonly used as the owner’s berth when cruising.
Head
Located aft of the salon on the starboard side, the head compartment includes:
- Marine toilet
- Sink with pressurized hot and cold water
- Shower area
- Storage for toiletries and gear
- The head is considered large for a 31-foot sailboat.
Aft Cabin
To port, aft of the companionway, is the aft stateroom, one of the standout features of the Oceanis 311.
- Large double berth tucked under the cockpit
- Hanging locker for clothing
- Storage shelves and compartments
- Opening portlight for ventilation
- Despite the boat’s size, the aft cabin is surprisingly spacious and comfortable.
Built by Beneteau USA in Marion, South Carolina.
The Beneteau 311 and the Oceanis 311 are essentially the same boat—the difference is purely a matter of marketing. From the 1990s until about 2011, Beneteau USA chose to market these models without using the "Oceanis" designation. Despite this marketing decision, the hull plaques on all of these boats still carried the "Oceanis" model name.
