Overview
RANGER is a replica of the "Super J-Class" yacht which successfully defended the Americas Cup in 1937 with a 4-0 win over the British yacht Endeavor II. The original RANGER was massive in sail area and volume with a steel hull and true to her classic lineage, the current RANGER is the largest volume of any of the “J-Class” yachts. The successful build of the current 136’ RANGER replica, launched by Danish Yachts in 2003 was the result of a passionate yachtsman’s vision and helped relaunch the “J-Class” as a successful fleet honoring this majestic 1930’s era in yachting history. Naval architects Studio Scanu, Reichel-Pugh, and Fred Elliott worked with the original lines of Starling Burgess and Sparkman and Stephens to create a “Super J” that not only wins in regattas, but cruises in style as a proper luxury yacht.
RANGER was designed and built with a steel hull and deck making her extremely stiff and strong in all and any conditions. Since her initial launching in 2003, there have been several refit efforts to reduce tonnage and thereby increase performance in varied conditions. The latest was a very comprehensive restoration and refit completed in Holland at Vitter’s Shipyard in 2019 for her current owner. Veteran J-Class Captain, Greg Sloat and his team managed a 16-month redesign of her deck layout and technical spaces encompassing every system aboard the yacht. The result reduced RANGER by 6 tons in the ends, ballast and aloft, where it matters most, and streamlined and renewed the expansive teak deck for more efficient sailing as well as much more comfortable and safe owner areas. All machinery was “0” hour rebuilt, and all systems upgraded. The hydraulic system that powers the sail handing systems supercharged to handle her vast sail area in all conditions. Hydraulics updated to 560L/min flow and 250 bars of pressure. Can be controlled with custom PLC system both below deck and on deck. It has multiple modes for racing plus cruising to customize flows and pressures for each instance. The central guest cockpit and doghouse were redesigned and rebuilt enhancing owner enjoyment areas on deck. The interior design includes the only J-Class yacht with 4 double owner/guest staterooms plus room for up to 8 crew. The interior boasts timeless elegance in high gloss book matched raised panel mahogany that is superbly detailed and maintained. Countless hours were spent on fitting modern technologies and living concepts in a vintage designed sailing yacht that conformed to the J-Class Association’s rules and regulations. She is the epitome of a "spirit of tradition" yacht and now fully renovated to exacting standards all approved and compliant to Lloyds Classification standards.
Accommodations
RANGER’S interior is a work of art in high gloss raised paneled mahogany, teak and holly floors, white headliner, and exquisite detailing true to the 1930’s elegance she emulates. The interior is finished in high gloss varnish which is in superb condition. All heads are beautifully detailed in art deco style tiling and lighting. Accommodation includes (4) four staterooms aft allowing for 8 -10 total berths. The headroom in the interior of the yacht is an impressive 2.2m / 7.2 feet at a minimum throughout.
The beautifully appointed full-width master stateroom aft with ensuite head and stall shower has a split mattress king berth with leather settees and ample hanging and drawer storage. Twin large overhead hatches and enhanced lighting via additional prisms.
There are 3 double guest staterooms forward of the Master aft starting with an over/under cabin that shares a head/ shower with the adjacent larger double just forward on the port side. The head for these staterooms also doubles as a guest day head. On starboard there is a slightly larger double stateroom with privet ensuite head/shower. The 2 forward guest cabins can sleep 3 guests if needs with pullman berths. All are well lit and have ample stowage.
Forward of the guest accommodations is the main saloon which is the cozy yet formally exquisite center piece of the yacht divided into a rich leather settee on the port side with TV and drinks fringe access and significantly ornate dining table on starboard capable of formal dining for 8-10. The elaborate central opening “butterfly hatch” skylight allows light to flood into the saloon and serve as ventilation to the area. Cabinetry and service stowage abound around the entire space. Elegant teak and holly floors and white head liners with LED ambient
lighting and fixed sconces add to the art deco ambiance.
The professionally equipped galley is forward of the saloon/dining area and to port with generous counter spaces and updated appliance and cabinetry. Generous stainless-steel refrigeration and freezer boxes are fitted in the galley as well as duplicated in the lower tank deck for massive cold storage. Access down to the technical areas, pump room and tank deck is through a large hatch. The crew mess for up to 8 is across from the galley to starboard and is equipped with all ships monitoring systems and video. Up to eight crew are housed forward of the galley in three cabins with two heads. The forward cabin sleeps four while two crew share in each of the other cabins.
The engine room has been generously designed to house all systems and machinery while offering over 7-foot headroom and great access to all areas for proper maintenance. The condition of the technical spaces is superb and resembles a newish vessel owing to the complete gutting, painting and reinstallation of all plumbing and systems in 2019. The spaces in RANGER are unique in the J-Class fleet, which will translate into better maintenance and more comfortable cruising and racing for years to come.

Major Work List
2024 Newport RI Lloyds 20-year Special Surveys completed and recertified including full audio gauge of hull and complete survey of mast and rigging to full satisfaction and resulting in Lloyds Class compliance. All through hulls, rudder, steering system valves, removed and inspected. Prop and shaft removed and inspected. Bow thruster removed and inspected.
Since April 2024, RANGER has been hauled out in Bridgeport CT within a fully protected tent, dehumidified and periodically monitored by her crew. Mast and boom are wrapped and stored alongside as are the yacht’s storage containers.
2019/2020 Major Restoration and Refit:
The current owner purchased RANGER in October 2018 and immediately sailed for Zaandam, Holland to prepare for a comprehensive restoration and refit of the entire yacht and systems. The goal was to make significant improvements to RANGER’s overall cosmetics, her deck layout and to modernize systems to increase her performance potential and render a more cruising comfortable yacht for her new owner and family. Vitter’s Shipyard in Holland was selected for the 16-month refit with Greg Sloat managing the effort and all work was done with Lloyds class approval.
2019/2020 Comprehensive Refit:
- Removal of all hull coatings to bare metal, surveying and treating and suspect areas and thereafter re-fairing and full Awlgrip repainting in Matterhorn White.
- Removal of existing teak decks, treating and prepping steel and aluminum subdeck, removal of existing pedestals, cockpit base structure, forepeak hatch and dorade boxes and re-installing new 12mm vacuum installed teak decks.
- Installation of 2 x new Custom Lewmar SS primary winches and service of all winches.
- Removal of existing pedestal controls, helm station instrumentation and compass and installation of new telegraph style engine controls, navigation monitor & wind instrumentation, and new helm gyro compass.
- Design and Installation of new guest cockpit to discretely house hydrostatic life rafts and allow for 8 guests to recline and dine of comfort and safety.
- Installation of new flush forepeak main hatch.
- Installation of 4 new deck prisms, new mast blocks and general improvement of leads, tracks and overall deck hardware.
- A significant noticeable improvement was the redesign of the carbon composite “doghouse” to allow better seating and addition of 5 windows facing aft and 2 portlights facing forward. The existing fire suppression system was replaced and moved as well as all wiring and nav systems resulting in an elegant, protected interior viewing and seating area.
- The entire engine room tech area was gutted to the hull sides and structure, cleaned and painted. All existing batteries were removed and replaced with more efficient battery systems, and this area was lowered to allow 7 foot plus headroom in the central engine room tunnel.
- 2 X 40 kW Northern Light generators were brought to “0” hours and reconditioned to new condition. Both generators had PTOs added for powering the upgraded hydraulic system.
- The Lugger 425 hp main diesel was also “0” hour-ed and reconditioned and has 2 x PTO’s powering the renewed hydraulic system.
- The Hydraulic system was completely renewed and vastly expanded to offer tailored power to sailing systems.
- Most systems in the engine room as needed were replaced with new ones and are listed herein.
- The Galley was revamped, and all appliances were replaced with commercial grade units. Existing SS refrigeration and Freezer boxes in the galley and below in the tank deck were all serviced with new compressors.
- Additional refit items:
- New navigation and communication systems.
- New custom Alarm and monitoring PLC based system.
- Full MHC Hydraulics system more than doubling capacity from original.
2018:
As in every year, Ranger completed her annual Lloyds Class, including MCA, and Cayman Islands surveys/work. In addition, during the annual yard period, particular attention was paid to servicing hydraulics, all sailing and deck gear, refrigeration overhaul, bow thruster overhaul, electrical upgrades, engine room details and paint work.
2017:
Particular attention was paid to work that would make Ranger faster on the course, from rig optimization increasing sail area and speed to fine fairing of the underbody, new sails and gear.
2014:
Completed 10year Lloyd’s Classification and Cayman Islands surveys, as well as rebuild of engine and generators; 10year rig/rigging removal, survey; teak decks completely refurbished.
2013:
Hull painted, and primary winches upgraded to handle 10 tons of load.
2009:
Replaced rod rigging with EC 6 composite rigging from Southern Spars: New spreaders and new lighter main boom.
Remarks
In 2018 RANGER was purchased by her current passionate owner and together with the original design brief of sailing yacht RANGER called for a yacht purposely used as a family cruising yacht, a racing yacht, a business incentive tool and a charter yacht. To this end, RANGER was built with all the amenities of a cruising yacht, to specifications of the J-Class Association and further built to Lloyds Class and MCA compliance for potential charter.
Over the years, J-Class rules and technology have evolved. Ranger has kept pace with upgrades and refits in weight reduction, Carbon rigging, new sails inventories, and many refits that keep her comfortable for cruising and competitive for racing.
In 2023 RANGER won the annual J-Class trophy. Previously she won the St. Barth’s Bucket overall, Les Voiles de St. Tropez first place in the IRC A division and among six J-Class yachts racing in Bermuda, RANGER triumphed with a second-place trophy in the America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta and third place trophy in the J-Class World Championship raced in Newport. RANGER is definitely a winner as well as being built to commercial shipping standards that make her the strongest and most capable J-Class yacht in any condition.
On the other hand, RANGER is also an elegant day sailing yacht that easily converts to a world capable, safe long-range cruiser. After the regatta trophy is stored below and the racing crew sent home, her safety stanchions are fitted on deck, superb 24 polished stainless dorades installed and cruising sails bent on her massive rig, she offers a totally different ambiance of relaxed sailing enjoyment.
Whether sailing locally with family and friends, corporate guests or charter guests, RANGER offers a variety of top- level sailing experiences unlike any other sailing yachts available. RANGER offers access to the very rare J-Class owner’s club and a unique opportunity to own a piece of modern sailing history.
