Descriptions

The Sabre 34

With over 255 manufactured by Sabre Company in Maine, the Sabre 34 is a great light air boat with enough ballast to stand up in a blow and is capable of offshore passages. She would make a fun club racer as well as a comfortable day sailer or long-distance cruiser. The Sabre 34 has a PHRF rating of 153, and coincidentally this is hull #153 as well. Note this is a Mk I boat and not a newer Mk II, hence the price value. She is also the deep-draft fixed keel model, not the centerboard model. She is well equipped for cruising for a couple or a family. Sabre 34’s have a reputation for being comfortable, sea kindly, and safe in heavy weather. The fact that Sabre 34's have held their value better than most sailboats is evidence of their excellent design and construction.

Sabre has an After Sales Service Department that offers online, telephone, and email support services for Sabre 34 owners even though the 34 is no longer in production. She is a good example of the classic sailing yachts that have been the hallmark of Sabre from its founding in 1970.

The Sabre Yachts website states their mission well: “Sabre sailing yachts are medium displacement, performance boats, blending the comfort of cruising, the ability for blue water passagemaking, and the capability of race winning performances….Sabre sailing yachts are designed for high load carrying capacity, and stability is achieved both by hull form and by high ballast-to-displacement ratios. Efficient lead keels provide excellent lift and performance characteristics as well as close upwind pointing angles. Sail plans offer the optimum balance of light air performance and heavy weather stability. Sabre sailing yachts are not wet race boats, nor are they heavy displacement “tanks”: they are comfortable, fast and highly refined yachts, fun to sail and a pleasure to own.” And Practical Sailor said "[Roger] Hewson's penchant for lively boats, combined with the detail-oriented Maine craftsmanship, is a chief reason why used Sabres remain so popular among split-personality sailors who enjoy PHRF racing as much as a leisurely summer cruise - something that can’t be said of many boats of the same vintage."
