The Chris-Craft Boat Company was founded in the late 19th century by Christopher Columbus Smith (1861–1939) in Algonac, Michigan. Smith built his first boat, a rowboat, in 1874 at the age of 13, and quickly became known as a skilled boatbuilder. Smith’s friends began asking him to build boats for them, and he soon began building boats full-time with his brother Hank. In 1910, the brothers partnered with others to form the Smith Ryan Boat Company.
