Description

Originally built and delivered in 2001 as "Double Trouble”, MerSea has crossed the Atlantic with the ARC Rally, cruised the Caribbean, and spent years based in Florida. She was acquired by her current owners in 2021, returned to Canet-en-Roussillon, and underwent an extensive refit over the course of three years. After sailing in the Mediterranean and crossing the Atlantic early 2025, the current owners intended on spending at least another year sailing the Caribbean. However, for personal reasons, they recently made the difficult decision to sell what they consider their “perfect boat.”

This is a rare, highly capable performance cruising catamaran, refitted to an exceptional standard with a focus on quality and reliability. MerSea is fully equipped and ready for extended bluewater cruising. MerSea is currently available for viewing in St. Vincent and the Grenadines or Martinique.

    Electrical, Power & Plumbing

    HOUSE ELECTRICITY (SERVICE)

    24 volts and 220 volts 50Hz

    • Electric system

Numerous defaults to original electric remote relay system (initial signs of combustion) so it

was entirely stripped out and replaced with resettable fuse boxes for house lighting and circuit

breakers (at switchboard in saloon) for nav equipment, nav lights, pumps, fridges etc.

Absolutely all cabling onboard was reviewed and either reconnected with new connectors

(heat shrink+glue tubing), outlets, lighting etc and/or replaced. Large amounts of old unused

cabling and equipment was removed from the boat including: HDMI cabling throughout the

    saloon and cabins; old TVs, VHS/DVD players; several 24/12v converters installed in the bilges;

6 x halogen lamps that supplied the fibre optic courtesy lighting in the saloon and cabins that

was faulty, inefficient in terms of energy and space. Could be replaced by LED strips if future

    owners wished.

    • 6 x 300Ah 12v ULTIMATRON pro lithium batteries (3 pairs = 900Ah 24v) with internal BMS

monitored via smartphone. Batteries, cabling, switches, busbars etc… new 2024. Installed in

large ventilated, easy access area under saloon seats.

    • 4 x 400 W DMEGC Silicium bifacial monocrystalline solar panels (1 600 W) on bimini hard

top. Positioned to leave central access to the boom. New 2024

    • 2 x Solar charge controllers VICTRON BlueSolar MPPT 100/50, one for each pair of panels

(port and starboard). New 2022. Controllers are located close to batteries in saloon area.

    • 1 x Inverter charger VICTRON Multiplus 24 | 5000 | 120 with VICTRON Color controller at

switchboard. Remote access via internet New 2024

    • 2 x 24v 110Ah service alternators New 2023 with external MASTERVOLT regulators (1 x Alpha

Pro II and 1 x Alpha Pro III New 2024)

    • 1 x 12.5Kw Phasor Marine generator 220v 60Hz. Dates from approx. 2011 (5 600 hours)

Full overhaul of Kubota engine in 2023. Works well!

As the generator is 60Hz and the appliances currently on the boat are 50Hz (kitchen, washing

machine….), it runs the water maker, heats water and charges the house batteries though, as

charging is through the VICTRON Multiplus, it is necessary to “downgrade the input current” so

    charging is not full power.

    • 1 x VICTRON 3600 W 115/230 V Isolation transformer

New 2023. Prevents electrolytic corrosion and guarantees a safe electric system. Eliminates

electrical continuity between AC shore power and the boat. Eliminates the need for galvanic

isolators and polarity alarms. Shore power is fed to the primary side of the transformer and the

    ship is connected to the secondary. Input: 115 or 230 V. Rating: 32 / 16 A.

    • Water, fuel gauges and voltmeters at switchboard

    • Remote control panel for the generator

    • Waterproof shore 220 V (AC) inlet, with extension cord Both new in 2024

    • Numerous interior and 1 exterior 220 V (AC) outlets

    PLUMBING

    • 6 x freshwater tanks: total 750 litres

The old freshwater tanks were integrated amidships in the bilges of each hull. The 20-year-old

paint inside was severely flaking into the fresh water and the plywood lids were waterlogged,

rotting and no longer watertight at all. New owners decided to remove entirely and replace in

2022 with polypropylene tanks. Without altering the cabin soles, the only access is through the

lifting floorboards. It was necessary to link 3 tanks together, each side, to approach the original

    holding capacity.

    • 1 x watermaker SEA RECOVERY Aqua Whisper Compact SRC AWC 1500-2 230 V (60Hz so

    runs off generator). 200-250 Litres/hour.

Full overhaul in 2024 with various parts replaced, inc new booster pump and both membranes.

Current owners would add an additional smaller 24v water maker to the boat as top up and

    back up.

    • Plumbing for drinkable water in rigid tubing. All checked, some replaced where necessary in

    2023.

    • Pressurized hot and cold water, 2 x independent MARCO UP12/E 2.5 bar, 36 litres/minute

    pumps with accumulators.

New pumps and accumulator membranes in 2023

    generator. New 2023

    • 3 x fuel tanks: total 1400 litres

    - 2 x 600 litres for the engines, in lockers forward of coachroof, connectable.

    - 1 x 200 litres for the generator, in locker under cockpit table, connectable for the

    engines.

    • Bilge pumps

    - 4 x RULE 1500 submersible pumps (2 x in each hull) at more or less midships. 100

    litres/minute. New 2022

    - 2 x WHALE Bilge Waste Pumps with suction strainers with IC automatic sensor (1 x each

    engine compartment). 19 litres/minute. New 2022

    - Manual bilge pumps behind each helm station.

    • 25 x Through-hull fittings

All new fittings and seacocks in 2023-2024. TRUDESIGN for all the fittings and seacocks below

the waterline except for engine room where bronze has been used and some higher fittings

where TRUDESIGN wasn’t available in the necessary lengths for hull thickness.

    FEW WORDS FROM CATANA

    Design

A boat that is easy to sail with a family crew or short-handed, balanced so that it can hold its

course well and offers a smooth and precise helm in any weather. Tacking and reefing is easy and

done from the cockpit. An extremely solid boat, reassuring and efficient in all conditions.

    Stability

An excellent beam/length ratio and hull inclination give a CATANA outstanding static and

dynamic stability. A cruising catamaran offers you an important stability (righting moment several

times greater than that of a monohull of comparative length. Thus, no more heeling. This feature is

even enhanced on a CATANA. To increase the overall stability of the boat without overly increasing

its total width (meaning added weight and efforts on the structure), the hulls are tilted outwards.

    Hulls

The elongated, torpedo-shaped hulls lessen the "rocking chair" effect in heavy seas and create

less drag than a normal wide-hulled catamaran. Boat speed is therefore higher for the same sail

area or equivalent engine power. The aerodynamic shape of the coach-roof windows reduces

windage, as well as being more aesthetically pleasing. When lifting the daggerboards, there is no

drag when reaching or running, the boat cuts effortlessly through the water and cruising speed is

much higher during long passages downwind. The volumes at both ends of a CATANA floater are

important, thus more resistant to pitching in swell.

    Centering the weights

The elongated waterline, as the centering of the weights, stabilise the boat and reduce pitching.

Bulbed and tulip-shaped bows to prevent pitching

The bulb section under the waterline is tuliped towards the deck, which greatly improves

performance in heavy weather. The bulb increases the volume of the hull submerged at the bows,

reducing pitching and submersion of the hulls. The tulip shape produces a resistance to pitching

directly linked to the rapid increase in volume on top of the hull. The very narrow section at the

waterline means excellent performance in calm seas.

    Unsinkability

Even when totally filled with water, the boat will not sink. The density of products used, the volume

of foam in its sandwich construction and the absence of ballast provide buoyancy. The totally

waterproof bulkheads add to the insubmersibility of the boat. In the case of a collision strong

enough to crack the hulls, no water can enter the living quarters. The "crash boxes", with

waterproof casing forward and aft, will keep any holes or leaks away from the living quarters in

    the event of a collision.

    Sandwich construction

CATANA boats are built entirely of sandwich construction under vacuum. For a catamaran where

each hull sails over different waves, its strength and long life depend on the rigidity and

consistency of the boat's structure. The core of the hulls and bulkheads is made from PVC foam,

with a density of 75 kg/m' and a minimum thickness of 20 mm. The core of the decks, platform

and coach-roof is made with foam up to 40 mm thick. Thick gelcoat (8/10 th) + Uni-directional,

    high-resistant + tri-axial glass fiber + core of PVC foam + uni-directional, tri-axial Twaron®

    materials.
