2012 Jeanneau 57

When Jeanneau launched the 57 she was the flagship of the range — a Philippe Briand hull with an interior and deck by Vittorio Garroni. She was sold under both names during her production run, and is still often listed as the Sun Odyssey 57.

At 58 feet and just over 20 tonnes, she is a substantial yacht. What makes this particular boat worth a serious look is that she has been equipped so that two people can sail her without help.

Sailed by two. The mainsail and the genoa both furl electrically, so neither sail has to be handled on deck. Four Harken electric winches take the load off every line led back to the cockpit. A bow thruster does the close-quarters work at the dock. The rig is a keel-stepped triple-spreader Sparcraft with in-mast furling. For an owner looking at this size of boat and wondering whether it is more than a couple can manage, this is the configuration that answers the question — and it is the reason boats set up this way tend to get used far more than boats that aren't.

Set up to stay out. Two 600-watt monocrystalline solar panels feed a Victron MPPT 250/100 controller into a six-battery Exide gel bank, with a 2,500-watt Mastervolt inverter on the output side. A watermaker removes the other reason most boats have to come back in. The Onan 10.5 kW generator becomes a convenience rather than a daily necessity — which is a different way of cruising, and one that most production yachts of this vintage were never equipped for.

Comfortable in both directions. Five Cruisair air conditioning units for the summer, a Webasto heating system for the shoulder seasons. Three refrigerators. A full galley with oven, stovetop, extractor hood and dishwasher, plus a washing machine. An electric saloon table and an electric television lift. Carpeted saloon and cabins.

Properly found on deck. Full teak deck. A 45 kg Ultra anchor on 150 metres of 12 mm chain — heavier ground tackle than this size of boat is usually delivered with, and the sort of specification that reflects an owner who anchors out rather than books a berth. Electric deck wash pump and spreader lights.

Navigation and systems. Twin Raymarine chartplotters with Raymarine satellite communications. Bose audio throughout.

Accommodation includes an independent forward skipper's cabin, keeping crew or additional guests separate from the main accommodation aft.
