Irwin introduced this big deck saloon cruiser at the Annapolis Boat Show in 1976, it was the start of of a trend that broke from tradition. It allowed for a completely new concept in a big cruising boat for a couple. It was suddenly possible to own your own ship. Here we are, nearly 50 years later, and the Irwin 52 may be the most popular big boat (50 ft. plus), ever built. This beamy ketch rigged cruiser is unapologetic for a motor-yacht like interior accommodations, a huge cockpit, wide side decks and raised bulwarks. The ketch rig sail plan is easily managed by a couple. Ironically, the Irwin 52 may be more popular today than when it was introduced. Our sailing population is becoming evermore cruising oriented, especially with families, cruising couples, and live aboards. With the acceptance of creature comforts to make long passages safe and comfortable, the Irwin 52 has a niche following. When you can find an Irwin 52, Series Il, at areasonable price, grab it, even fi you have to do some refitting and upgrading. You wil not regret it. Unlike other designs from this time period (e.g. Morgan, Bil Garden), the Irwin 52 is reasonably fast. It carries 1,350 sq.ft.sail, sports a 44 ft. waterline, a long keel, and a balanced rudder. Board up draft is only 5'6".
