Description

The Beneteau 473 is a great all-around cruising yacht. It's well built, has a large and comfortable interior, a reasonable draft of 5' 7", and an ICW-friendly air draft of +/- 63'. It's hard to find a comparable boat in the 44' to 50' range that offers as much as the 473 for less than $200,000.

Phantom has had two owners who have taken excellent care of it. The current owner purchased Phantom in 2020 in SC and relocated it to Michigan after having the hull painted a light khaki color. She was sailed seasonally in fresh water and stored on the hard each winter with the cockpit shrink-wrapped and the mast unstepped. The mast was inspected and cleaned each spring before Phantom was relaunched.

Phantom has several recent upgrades.

    Construction

The single-skinned hull is of GRP construction. The structure is reinforced at various points (keel, rudder, chain plates, deck line, etc.). A structural single-skinned inner molding is bonded and laminated to the hull. Its structural role is important as it takes and absorbs the stresses at pressure points (chain plate tie rods, keel, rudder, etc.) and spreads any loads, guaranteeing reduced strain on the hull. The surface of the inner molding makes cleaning easier and provides a better finish.

The deck comprises sandwich (fiberglass/balsa) construction for an optimal strength/weight ratio and excellent thermal and sound insulation. A ‘diamond point’ non-slip surface increases safety over all areas of movement on deck.

The hull/deck joint is secured by way of a bonded and screwed teak bulwark. This mechanical assembly ensures the hull/deck joint is watertight and provides extra safety while moving about.

The keel is cast iron. It is attached to the boat by a system of screws and stainless steel backing plate and bonding. To improve the durability, the keel is given anti-corrosion treatment and improved finish in the factory before assembly, using epoxy-based coatings and paint.

Single Rudder with glass composite stock.
