Description
Southerly Yachts are solidly built blue-water cruising boats with a robust variable draft swing keel. The Southerly 42RS, designed by Rob Humphreys, was built by Northshore Yachts Ltd in England. It has a plum bow that increases the waterline length and a broad transom that maintains volume aft for performance and interior space. The semi-balanced twin rudders provide responsive steering and precise directional stability, and the robust variable draft swing keel is a game changer that improves performance and opens up cruising grounds and anchorages.
The Southerly 42RS can go where most boats cannot, with an extreme shoal draft of two feet nine inches. Imagine where you can sail this boat and the safe harbors and anchorages you can enjoy. If you like, you can even beach it! The variable draft ability is a real bonus when tucking in out of a storm. You can lower the keel by pushing a button to an impressive maximum draft of eight feet eleven inches in deep water. With the keel down, her performance is sparkling, pointing to nearly 30 degrees to the wind.
Tango was commissioned and delivered to the original owner in 2007. She features a raised salon, two cabins, two heads, twin rudders, a single wheel, and a variable draft swing keel. Thanks to the in-boom furling main, a self-tacking head sail, an electric winch, and control lines leading aft to the helm, one to two people can easily handle Tango.

Full Details
Interior
Companionway steps lead to a large open salon area. The deck salon windows provide panoramic views and give you an instant feeling of space. Partially reflective tinted glass provides privacy while also deflecting the sun's rays. "Tango" has two cabins and two heads and will comfortably sleep seven people. It has lovely Cherry interior joinery and teak and holly floors.
Main Salon:
The large raised salon is spacious and has generous seating for eight people. The salon table folds to provide a smaller coffee table, expands for a large dining table, and lowers for an additional double berth. The large salon windows provide great visibility and allow you to see what is happening around you. This area is very comfortable either underway or when entertaining. Plenty of storage is found under the seating and outboard in lockers. A bookshelf is conveniently located at the forward end of the seating. Concertina blinds can be drawn partially or completely over the salon windows for additional privacy. Dimmer lights add to the ambiance.
Nav:
The chart table is on starboard and raised to take advantage of the panoramic views. For additional details, see "Navigation and Electronics" below.
Galley:
The galley is amidships to starboard in a lower position for the greatest comfort at sea. For further details, see "Galley" below.

Owner's Cabin:
The spacious owner's cabin is aft. It has a large double berth with a memory foam topper and is split in the middle. This area has good light and ventilation, with opening ports, fans, overhead lights, and reading lights. A large hanging locker, outboard lockers, and shelves provide storage. A large flat-screen HDTV is also provided here for entertainment.
Forward Cabin:
The forward cabin has a long V-berth with a filler. There is also a single bunk on the starboard side above the V-berth. A large hatch overhead and hull ports provide plenty of light and ventilation. Curtains cover the ports for privacy. To port is a large locker with shelves, and to starboard is a hanging locker and outboard shelves. There is also storage beneath the berth.

Hull, Deck and Equipment
Hull:
Hand laid up heavy-duty GRP molding, incorporating multi-axial and unidirectional reinforcements for strength and impact resistance. The hull is cored above the water line for insulation and weight reduction and is made of solid glass below. Thickness increases progressively toward the keel area. The keel box is an integral part of the hull layup. A substantial skeg is fitted on the centerline to protect the propeller and rudders when the yacht is dried out.
Bottom paint and zincs new, Spring 2024
Swing Keel:
The Swing Keel (this is not a centerboard) can be easily raised and lowered with just the push of a button and stopped anywhere in between. When lowered, the keel is an impressive 8 feet 11 inches, considerably deeper than all other similar-sized cruising yachts. The additional draft enhances both performance and stability. The push button control and a gauge to show the keel position are fitted at the pedestal (and an extra control in the cabin). This system was fully serviced and rebuilt in 2020 with valuable custom upgrades and extensive spare parts.
Deck:
The decks are two-toned with a beige nonslip. Raised teak-capped bulwarks provide extra comfort and safety. Forward is a stainless steel stem head fitting with twin bow rollers, a windlass, and a beautiful SS Ultra anchor. The Deck Salon windows have partially reflective tinted glass, which provides privacy while deflecting the sun's heat.
Cockpit:
The cockpit is deep and well-protected, with comfortable seats long enough to sleep on. The helm seat lifts provide an easy walk-through to the transom. Two cockpit lockers provide plenty of stowage for sails, etc. The transom has sugar scoop steps and a stainless steel ladder.
