    Bob Perry on X-412

High performer with cruising interior By Bob Perry

    August 25, 2000

With a D/L ratio of 218, the X-412 is not light. A displacement/length ratio of 150 or less would qualify as light, but 218 almost borders on medium. This D/L ratio does not use the length on the water added by the thin skeg. Most designers would automatically use this number, but Jeppesen has been more honest with us and given us the useful DWL. If you use the DWL including the skeg, you reduce the D/L ratio to 182. Displacement means hull volume and usable interior space. It also means a good all-around performer that may be better mannered than a light boat. It may also mean a more moderate design that will be more favorably looked on by the IMS than would a light boat.

The hull profile shows a distinct knuckle forward and a definite inflection about 14 inches forward of the rudder stock. This inflection, or kink, in the profile line is just the type of shape manipulation that most IMS designs are trying to avoid. The hull has a wide transom that goes quite flat at centerline. Both rudder and skeg have curved leading and trailing edges. The rudder is huge. Standard draft of this design is seven feet, two inches. Note the location of the mast of the X boat relative to the leading edge of the keel. They pretty much line up with the leading edge of the mast being right over the leading edge of the keel intersection with the hull. The SA/D ratio for this design is 19.89. This rig has triple spreaders, in-line lowers, running backstays and a babystay.

The interiors for the X-412 offer the option of one or two sleeping compartments forward. This is a twist on the usual variation aft. The forward area is available with one double berth and a short settee or you can nestle in upper and lower berths adjacent to the head compartment. The main cabin swirls around in curved shapes that look very attractive. The companionway is indented into the trunk to open up the area aft for two sleeping compartments with hanging lockers and double berths. It is difficult to use the centerline settee feature without really crowding the main cabin, but it is successful in this design. The galley is not U-shaped, but the seat back of the centerline settee should keep the cook relatively secure. The icebox appears to extend aft under the chart table.

    Construction

    CONSTRUCTION / CE-CERTIFICATION

The X-412 has been built in accordance with the European CE- Certification and meets the requirements of the CEdirective

    94/25/CE for recreational crafts.

These rules require a certain minimum standard of hull and deck strength, structural bulkheads and stringer, keel and

rudder and their attachment to the hull, safety and stability, engine installation, gas installation, sea cocks, manuals

and documentation of all major installations.

    Table of contents

    HULL/DECK & HULL/DECK JOINT

Hull as well as deck are in hand laid E-glass reinforced on special high stress areas with Triaxial fibre glass in

connection with a sandwich laminate using hard compressed Divinycell 20 mm as core material. Solid laminated

around the keel reinforcement girder system, the engine install, the propeller, the rudder bearings as well as in

connection with all through hull fittings.

Hull surface outside is made of white gelcoat with 3 blue waterlines & sheer line moulded into the freeboard. Deck reinforced around and under all deck hard ware fittings with marine plywood instead of the hard compressed

Divinycell foam in a thickness of 15 - 20 mm.

Surface of deck outside is white gelcoat and the antislip areas on side decks are light grey, when ordered without teak laid deck. Area around cabin windows is blue.

Hull and deck are glued together with a special polyester resin and are bolted together for each 100 mm with a 8 mm s/s screw with washer and nut.

    Electronics

The Primary electronics of navigation are Raymarine with 3 Multi-Gauge (MAXI's) Display at the mast just under the boom, 4 multi-displays at the companionway, the primary chart plotter at the helm station, plus the radar display and controls at the Nav station below for auto pilot, depth sounder, Log, speed, wind speed, direction, chart plotter, GPS, and Radar plus all standard features.

    Broker's Comments

Not just a Cruiser Racer, The X-Yacht 412 Mark III is built to be a PERFORMANCE CRUISER. Set up for short handed sailing with the German Mainsail trimming system and other convenient features, it's ideal for a couple to cruise. Yachting Monthly gave the X-412 a Rating of 91%. The interior fit and finish is high quality and the comfort level below is definitely not your typical race boat. With the 2 cabin layout there is a lot of storage space in the port cockpit locker larger head and very wide and comfortable captain's cabin on Starboard. With 2 heads, the forward head is nice for another couple or crew member or can be just for taking showers. "Inphase" has not been raced hard and has really only been cruised but could easily be raced or go off-shore cruising. For more information Call, Text, or email...
