Accommodations

Tapawingo’s interior is finished out in bright, Birch with heather blue upholstery that doesn’t show its age. The sole is durable teak and holly floorboards that lock into place with pins and ABI latches. All flat surfaces on the galley, nav station and salon table feature tall fiddles to keep tools, dishes and books in place while under way.

Beginning forward, there is a large V-berth cabin. The cushions extend all the way outboard to the hull and are a full 6’5” long. Two opening portlights and one overhead deck hatch with screens provide good ventilation and light to the space. There are three storage drawers under the berth with cabinets on each side. There are two large, cedar-lined lockers outboard against the hull for hanging storage.

The main salon is situated midships in the boat aft of the forward cabin. On the port side is a settee that is 5’ long and looks across at the dinette table and U-shaped settee. This arrangement drops down for a sea berth or for guests. The mast is slightly aft of the forward bulkhead, which allows access on both sides of the settee. There is good open storage above the settees for books or manuals and three cabinets. There is ample stowage space for large items below the cushions and the water tanks run centerline, above the keel, in stainless tanks. Two Hella cabin fans and headroom of 6’ 5” provide good air circulation.

The galley is aft on the starboard side and has phenomenal storage outboard above and below the counter top. The double basin stainless sink is centerline so it will drain on both tacks and has manual fresh and seawater and pressurized hot and cold and filtered drinking water. The gimballed Force10, three-burner stove is opposite with an opening portlight above for ventilation. The fridge/freezer unit is top loading at the aft end of the galley and providing a little more counter top space. There is a microwave above.

Opposite on the port side is the dedicated forward facing navigation station. This space is essential for long passages, having all your information in one place. Outboard against the hull is open storage for navigation books and cruising guides and safe storage for plotting tools under the flip top.

The head is next aft on the port side. Having it at the base of the companionway it is useful while on watch. There is a manual forward facing toilet and single sink with pressure and manual water. There is a dedicated shower stall forward with a teak seat outboard and a self-draining wet locker aft of the toilet.

The aft cabin is a cozy space for guests or a sea berth for passages. Easily accessible to the cockpit, galley and head is ideal. There is one locker for hanging storage and the third (aftmost) freshwater tank is located below the bed.

Deck and Hull

Tapawingo is finished in a bright blue gel coat with a white boot stripe, teak rub rail 2/3 of the way up the hull and a gray cove stripe just below the teak cap rail. The hull construction is traditional. Fiberglass is hand-laid with resin and balsa core above the water line and on deck. The balsa is kept away from major deck fittings such as stanchions and chainplates. The deck and internal bulkheads are through bolted and bedded with polyurethane to increase the strength. The fin keel is moderately long creating better directional stability in a big seaway. The rudder is skeg hung with Whitlock rack and pinion steering.

The deck is balsa cored, bonded and through bolted to the hull and capped with a teak caprail that forms a 5” bulwark along the length of the deck. On the bow, there is a double anchor roller and short bowsprit projecting the anchors away from the hull when being raised or lowered. The horizontal Lighthouse windlass supports both anchors and ground tackle simultaneously for situations when two anchors are necessary. A segregated anchor locker below makes sure both run free and accessible through the forward cabin. The stainless bow pulpit is 31” off the deckand is met with higher than usual covered stainless lifelines that run all the way aft.

There is a gate midships on both sides for boarding. On the cabin top there are teak handrails and stainless mast pulpit above the teak dorade boxes at the base of the mast. The upper standing rigging is run to a chain plate outboard of the hull while the two lowers run through the deck to chainplates mounted to structural bulkheads. The wide flat side decks have gray molded in non-skid with a cream gel coat base. Water channels are molded in so green water flows off the deck quickly. All lines are lead aft into the cockpit through a bank of clutches where any of the four Harken cabin top winches can be used. The deep cockpit is easy to move

around in and is secure while at sea, including two dedicated reinforced harness attachments for added crew safety. The cockpit is fairly small for a boat of this size due to the canoe stern but this makes all lines within reach for single-handed sailing. For engine maintenance in port, the cockpit sole lifts out for top down engine room access and the port side provides great storage or room for a possible water maker. On the starboard stern there is an additional anchor locker and hawspipe for a stern anchor. The Nav Pod at the helm station holds the chartplotter, wind, depth and speed data for navigation.
