The Fortuna Island Spirit 401 is a 40-foot cruising catamaran known for its spacious design, comfortable liveaboard features, robust construction, and solid sailing performance. Built in South Africa by Fortuna Yachts, it is highly regarded for being a well-balanced boat that combines functionality, safety, and comfort with excellent sailing performance. In 2003 the redesigned Island Spirit 401 was launched. The boat was awarded Sail magazine's Top Ten in 2003 with a 2003 Boat of the Year nomination.

It is constructed with solid glass below the waterline and balsa cored decks. Each hull is separated into multiple compartments with a sealed crush compartment fore and aft making them extremely safe. The Island Spirit 401 is light and agile for its size due to the use of foam core construction, while still offering generous interior space. Built to be lived aboard, the IS 401 has more living space, storage and comfort

than any of its contemporary catamaran designs. Often compared to the Lagoon 380 or

Leopard 40 with more of an independent builder's touch and thoughtful design choices, It's also more nimble and sailor-friendly than many mass-market charter catamarans, while still being comfortable and livable. There are very few catamarans that offer this balance of performance, safety, and excellent living accommodations.

Layout, Comfort:

4-cabin layout: Each hull has two cabins with nice headroom and light. Comfortably sleeps 8, ideal for families or charter use.

2 heads with electric toilets, sinks and showers

Large, bright saloon with panoramic windows and a practical galley-up layout.

Expansive cockpit that's well-shaded with a hardtop Bimini - great for socializing or dining outside.

Wide transoms and sugar-scoop sterns make boarding from a dinghy or swimming easy.

All lines lead to the helm which combined with visibility to all four corners, allows her to be easily sailed single-handed.

Well-equipped galley with propane stove, oven, fridge/freezer, and good counter space.

The bridge deck clearance is higher than many cats in its class, which helps reduce

slamming in rougher seas.

One unique aspect: these boats are rudder-post steered (not cable) and have dual helms,

located aft, giving good visibility and direct control.

Solar panels and inverter for off-grid capability
