Built at Chute & Bixby of Huntington, Long Island, completed in 1936. The thorough 'very major', definitive refit and impeccable rebuilding program was concluded in 2002 by Nathan Greeley at his boatworks in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. At that time, she was known as RANGER and was declared to be: "basically a new vessel" by one of the most respected wooden yacht surveyor's on the east coast.
Carvel mahogany planked on steam bent oak frames. Fastened with copper rivets and bronze screws. Full custom cut main sail, Evolution jib and mizzen sails new in 2012. Also a new set of cotton sails (for antique class regattas). Auxillary power provided by 47 hp Westerbeke diesel engine rebuilt 2000, estimated @ 800 hours since rebuild. Her interior is spacious and appointed with comfortable berths. Awarded the prize as "Most Pleasing Sailboat" at Mystic Seaport Wooden Boatshow 2011.

PANTOUF is a well found, seaworthy, traditional cruising boat. The beauty of PANTOUF is everything needed to be done has, and she remains original in concept and true to her era. Construction:
PANTOUF was custom designed by Samuel Stugis Crocker, Manchester Massachusetts and was originally built in Huntington, Long Island by Chute and Bixby in 1935-36 (design-build hull# 166).
A ‘very major’ and complete re-building program of PANTOUF began in 1992 and was finished by early summer 2002. Nathan Greeley’s Boat Shop in Portsmouth NH completed the impeccable re-construction.
The hull (full keel) is mahogany carvel planked over milled 2” steam bent oak frames. Hot dipped galvanized keel bolts, cast iron ballast. Rounded bow with fir bow sprit, varnished mahogany transom. Topsides painted dark green with white boot and bottom painted red. The reconstruction included replacement of nearly all of the frames in the vessel with exception of a few in the stern, found to be in good condition. The floor timbers were replaced and additional ones were added in the heart of the bilge. PANTOUF’s stem and transom were also replaced during this time. A new deck was built of 2” x 2” and 2” x 2 ½ deck frames with 1/2" laminated plywood subdeck with a 1/2" laid teak overlay. The forward corner posts of the cabin were replaced and a new cabin top was fitted. Tongue and groove sole.
A re-built 47 HP Westerbeke 4-107 was installed during the refit, and after that work was done, a new interior was constructed. Some of the original joiner work was saved and refitted giving the vessel much of the original look.
As the interior was being installed PANTOUF was totally rewired to NFPA-302 codes. PANTOUF (then known as RANGER) was surveyed by Capt. Paul Haley (of G.W. Full and Associates Inc. Marine Surveyors & Consultants) Marblehead MA), in June of 2002, for insurance purposes and he reported: “At this time the vessel is basically a new vessel”.
A more recent survey is now available upon viewing.
Since 2006 she has been meticulously maintained by her owners, since 2015 by her present owners. Cabinetry was added in main cabin, a V-berth arrangement in the forward cabin, and she has been painted out/varnished annually. She has multi season bottom paint (applied 2023).
Accommodations and layout below:
PANTOUF has a traditional cabin plan with comfortable berths. Chain locker forward followed by forepeak. The forward cabin now has a full sized V-berth (2016) Below is ample stowage. An overhead varnished teak hatch provides ventilation and two opening cast bronze portholes provide ambient light. Abaft is the full width head and shower. It is a stand up hot/cold pressurized shower with sump amd sump pump. The head itself is an Airhead compositing Type III MSD.
To starboard is a hanging locker. Abaft the head is the main cabin. To starboard is a settee with a dropdown double and to port is a settee berth. Traditional drop leaf table midships adjacent to bulk head mounted stove. Outboard are lockers and cabinets (to port). Aft to starboard is the navigation station, abaft of which is a double quarter berth. The clean and well appointed galley is aft to port and features a two burner Origo non pressurized alcohol stove, double bay stainless steel sink with cold pressurized water, insulated ice box, ample storage for provisions and kitchen equipment with cabinets, drawers lockers and a trash bin below the stove. The hot water heater has been removed, but plumbing remains in place. For ambient light and ventilation there are two overhead varnished teak hatches with double dead lights, and eight bronze opening portholes. The custom made green interior cushions were new in 2011. Fixed and adjustable traditional lights in main saloon, head and forcastle. Engine access is behind companionway stairs. The companionway has an access hatch with teak weatherboards.
Deck, ground tackle and sundry equipment:

Sails and Rigging:
Ketch rigged. main'mst (stepped on keel) and mizzen (also keel stepped), and booms, are glued round Sitka spruce. The standing rigging is 1x19 stainless steel wire with poured ends. The running rigging is three strand Dacron.
The sails consist of full custom cut mainsail, mizzen (Evolution, new in 2012), staysail, and working jib (Evolution, new 2012). There are a cotton jib and mizzen made for PANTOUF, to allow racing as antique class in regattas which do not permit modern sails. There is a custom cockpit awning in excellent condition.
Four traditional Merriman Brothers bronze sheet winches (mainsheet winches are mounted on cast bronze elevated pedestals) and two traditional boom outhaul Merriman winches. Fir bowsprit. Varnished transom boomkin.
Bronze rod traveller for the main, with traditional block and tackle, end-boom sheeting. Self tending jib.
Addtional: Sail battens, canvas mast base weather boots, sail ties, sail bags, winch handles, open-barrel cast bronze turnbuckles.
