Description
Hinterhoeller Yachts of Canada produced about 1,000 of these immensely popular sailboats. Mark Ellis designed the boat to be very easy to sail with a single wishbone rigged mainsail, and a modern fin keel and spade rudder. The result was a ship that is surprisingly fun to sail, and that points just as well as other sloops on the same vintage. Off the wind, Nonsuch are fast. The build quality of Hinterhoeller is legendary.
In a review Michael McGoldrick wrote, "although the Nonsuch's single large sail means that its windward ability will not equal that of a sloop with headsail, its modern underwater profile allows it to point higher than many people would expect. The fin keel and spade rudder found on the Nonsuches also does away with the windward helm which is characteristic of the Cape Cod catboats. One of the great advantages of the Nonsuch boats is that they are very easy to sail short-handed, or even single-handed.
At 11'10" beam for 30'4" length, the beam to length ratio is extreme in comparison to most monohulled sailboats. This results in an enormous amount of living space, and a very comfortable cockpit with clean uncluttered decks.
