Huckins Yacht Company is one of the oldest custom boatbuilders in the USA that still builds yachts in its founder’s name. Founded in 1928 by Frank Pembroke Huckins in Jacksonville, Florida, the first launch was built with one of the first true planing hulls for speed and stability through offshore sea conditions. His brilliant design was patented as the “Quadraconic” hull based on the convex shapes that minimized pounding at cruising speed, kept a 3-3.5 degree running attitude and was extremely lightweight for efficient performance. Weight balance was carefully engineered, and hulls were diagonally double-planked, another innovation as most wood boats were carvel planked. Frank Huckins was an early adopter of the cold-molded process with a layer of fiberglass over wood. Huckins is famed for the seaworthy design of WWII naval PT boats, utilizing his speedy lightweight Quadraconic hull, that John F Kennedy piloted.
The custom, built-to-order 2015 Huckins 45 Sportfisherman features the quadraconic hull with refinements engineered for modern 425hp Cummins QSB 6.7 diesels and ZF-2800 pod drives. WOMBAT is easy to maneuver with joystick controls that feature dynamic positioning.
